UI/UX Design for Websites: From User Journey to Clear Interfaces

Updated October 6, 2026

A website interface works well when people can understand what it offers and find their next step. UI/UX planning connects that experience with your business goals before the visual details become expensive to change.

Define the user and the task

Identify who will use the website and what they need to accomplish. Separate primary actions from supporting information. Use existing customer questions and support issues to make the brief concrete.

Map the journey

Sketch how a person moves from an entry page to a useful outcome. Check the information needed at each step. Include unsuccessful searches, form errors and unanswered questions rather than planning only the ideal path.

Agree on the structure before polishing screens

Review navigation, page sections and wireframes early. Once the hierarchy is clear, define type, spacing, colour and component behaviour. Reusable patterns make the site easier to build and maintain.

Design for more than one device

Show how layouts change on smaller screens. Keep touch targets, labels and focus states visible. Do not rely on colour alone to explain an error or the state of a control.

Test and hand over the decisions

Use a prototype to check the main task with representative users where possible. Record the issues and revise the design. Include component states, responsive rules and editable source files in the handover.
